Following me putting up my Results Summary spreadsheet to download on previous posts, I have been contacted by a reader who has very kindly offered his Trading Analysis spreadsheet for everyone to download. Click here to get it. All he would like in return is feedback and any bugs/problems found so please leave comments on this post and I will pass on any replies.
(Note: the P&L figures are random and not the author's or mine!)Click on the "About" tab to get info about why the spreadsheet was created and some tips on usage. The spreadsheet works on Excel 2000, 2003 & 2007 which is a real bonus.
You need to turn macros on if they aren't by default on your version of Excel (more on this at the end of a previous post). After you have done an import (click on the red "update" button in the top-left of the screen), the data for that import will be visible on the "Recent Results" tab. You can double-click on a date, track, race type or distance and your P&L will be summarised by that on the right-hand side of the screen.
The level of detail offered by the spreadsheet is fantastic and the more historical data you have on your trading the more use this spreadsheet will be in revealing patterns. The separate tabs for all of your previously imported data (including the current import) can be accessed by clicking on the buttons to the right of the screen or on the tabs at the bottom of the screen. Again, it is summarised by date, track, race type or distance.
I think that the level of detail available here will make it especially useful for in-running punters/traders, for instance, being able to split your P&L by distance or track for a whole season of data could be pretty revealing.
Whilst the distance of a race or track wouldn't obviously be a factor for traders who purely trade pre-race (and don't slip in-play!), have a look, you never know! Don't forget to leave a comment once you've had chance to use it, a lot of work has gone into this spreadsheet so I'm sure the author would appreciate it.
Cheers & Happy New Year!
looks impressive but does it cover place markets too ? Ones I've used in the past always put them as errors cos the race distance isn't in there and I do alot of place markets :(
ReplyDeleteVery good site
ReplyDeleteTo TMF, Betfair don't put distance (or race type) on the P&L data for place markets as they do for win markets, so sadly this data isn't available for analysis. It's a shame they do it this way instead of having the same info as win markets and just suffixing with TBP. E-mail them and ask for it to be changed (don't hold your breath though!).
ReplyDeleteHowever, the spreadsheet still summarises by course & date for place markets.
Yet another informative post MG. Congratulations on such a well thought out and helpful blog.
ReplyDeleteHi, I have downloaded and the other betfair panl sheet you did and i can't get either to work for some reason? the trading spreadsheet says "cannot find spreadsheet named bettingpandl on the desktop? It is definatley there?
ReplyDeleteThe results summary gives me an error and i have entered the filepath exactly as it is shown on my computer "Users\james\Documents\betfair results\Results summary\BettingPandL.xls"
But still no joy? any ideas?
thanks
james
Hi, Thanks for the reply. I have a folder in documents called betfair results and in that i have the resuls summary spreadsheet and the betfairPandL in that. i open the results summary spread sheet and click import pandl. I then get the 1004 error, I click debug and replace the text so that i have Workbooks.Open Filename:= _
ReplyDelete"\Users\james\Documents\betfair results"
I exit and click import and get the 1004 error saying excel cannot access "betfair results" the document may be read only or encrypted.
I haven't a clue what i am doing wrong?
james
Another thing, I have excel2007 and i notice the pandl download when i hover the mouse over it says microsoft office excel 97-2003 workbook?? so i dont know why this is?
ReplyDeleteRight, I have put the results summary spreadsheet just into documents and not into the betfair results folder. the filepath i have now is Workbooks.Open Filename:= _
ReplyDelete"\Users\james\Documents\Results summary\BettingPandL.xls"
I then get the 1004 error saying "\Users\james\Documents\Results summary\BettingPandL.xls" could not be found please check the spelling of the filename and check the location of the file is correct?
I have noticed on the betfairpandl the name does not end in .xls and i am having to rename the file so that it ends with .xls.
I am sorry for going on, Its just this would be so useful for me and i am desperate to get it working.
thanks
james
This spreadsheet is great. I can't even begin to think how long it would have taken me to do something similar. Thanks to the author, thanks to the blogger and thanks to the fixers.
ReplyDeleteCheers Brian!
ReplyDeletehi,
ReplyDeleteI have to say that the spreadsheet is a wonderful toy. thanks for sharing.
unfortunatelly it doesn't show the correct figure. It shows that I won all my races but in fact I didn't.
Also in the 'Date history' tab it doesn't show the figure at the top. Instead of that there is a #Arg! sign. Can you help me, please?
Cheers
Chris
Hi Chris, I took a look at your screenshot and I'm afraid I don't know why this isn't working on your pc. Apparently it works on Excel 2000, 2003 or 2007, are you using one of those? I'll e-mail the author of the sheet and let you know if I hear back.
ReplyDeletehi,
ReplyDeleteI have emailed you the workbook. Looking forward for a reply.
ok,so what the data format should it be?
ReplyDeleteyes mate,done!!! :)
ReplyDeletevery good suggestion. it works now. so everyone should set English in the Regional & Language Options as a language.
Thanks a lot!!!
Great news! It's funny how last ditch attempts can often come through. At least that's what I'm hoping for with England's World Cup performance.....
